Shelley Gill In Antarctica

Shelley was a long-time friend of Norman Vaughan, a member of the original expedition team led by Admiral Byrd in 1928-1930 to the South Pole in Antarctica. She wrote a book (Adventure At the Bottom of the World) about Vaughan's return to Antarctica at age 89 to climb the peak named after him by Byrd six decades earlier.

Her friendship with Vaughan sparked Shelley's dreams of visiting Antarctica. In 2007, two years after Norman died at the age of 100, she took some of his ashes down to Marie Byrd Land and left them tumbling on an iceberg at 80°S 120°W. She sailed south with nine others aboard the sailboat Golden Fleece and spent six weeks wandering and exploring the peninsula meeting penguins and leopard seals in the wild.

Share Shelley's experiences exploring Antarctica by reading her blog about it, written as the experience was happening.
